About the BAE Department
“The Biological Engineering department is more like a family…BE teaches you how to build a boat and then sends that boat into a community where you learn to affect change.” - Matthew Hutchins, LSU BioEngineering Alumnus
Engineering for Life
In the Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering, we work at the intersection of biology and engineering to solve problems and achieve goals in biomedical, bioenvironmental, biomechanical, bioprocess, and agricultural systems. Our research, educational, and extension programs span the aforementioned areas and impact people directly, as well as the built environment that surrounds them.
Our undergraduate program in biological engineering is student-centered, and laboratory and design intensive.
Students engage in coursework that integrates applied science (biology, chemistry,
and physics) into the fundamental engineering principles, including those in biological,
mechanical, civil, electrical, and chemical engineering. This course of study yields
professionals with a uniquely diverse and highly applicable skill set. Our students
go into the workforce in engineering, into graduate study in multiple fields including
biomedical engineering, and into professional schools, including medical and health
fields.
Our graduate programs (Masters in Biological & Agricultural Engineering, and Ph.D. in Biological Engineering)
prepare students for research and leadership roles in academia, industry, and government.
Read our 2024 Newsletter to find out more about what's going on within our department, including welcoming new faculty and summaries of some of our current research projects.
Begin your career-long journey in Biological Engineering by planning your visit, contacting our undergraduate or graduate coordinators, and finding out more about our degree programs and BAE facilities.
Our long and short-term goals and strategies are laid out in detail in our departmental Strategic Plan.
